We are living in polarized times. Important values, peoples, and landscapes are in danger. There is also a wave of energy and resistance rising up to fight for all that is good and kind and just. This is not the first time human rights, human dignity, and respect for difference have been threatened and I have been looking to the past for strength, looking to those that have fought harder and been braver than I have ever been called to be, whose clarity around right and wrong sank into the marrow of their being... Harriet Tubman, Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King, Sonia Sotomayor, Dolores Huerta, Wilma Mankiller, Malcolm X, Angela Davis, and a great many others whose acts of heroism were never recognized publicly. I look around me now at the everyday people in my life that I interact with... my activist neighbor with 17 grandchildren who passes by our house on her way to encourage people to vote and advocate for those less fortunate.... an artist mentor who goes to public libraries and street corners and draws the people no one else notices and makes them feel seen.... my father who goes out into the world each day despite his head injury and tells his story and connects with people and makes them smile... my mother who taught us about gratitude for our blessings and the beauty of life without reference to her heavy burdens...my mother-and-father-in-law who left their country with three young children to start over again and sacrifice everything that they might succeed. There are so many people who keep me believing in humanity. I want to keep their courage, their endurance, their strength in my sight.
Who invigorates you? Who are the ordinary or not so ordinary people who invigorate you in your daily life to fight for the values you believe in? We can all learn so much from each other’s inspirations and stories, and gather needed strength.
How does the project work? You share your story of inspiration in the form below and order the portrait from my shop, I paint the portrait on 12" x 12" cardboard. The portraits and accompanying stories will be posted on my Facebook (Radici Studios) and Instagram feed (@radicistudios) to inspire others. Let's keep invigorating each other and moving towards the light of a brighter tomorrow.
