When my brother was 5 he loved airplanes. He and my mom would go to the library to check out stacks and stacks of books on the history of planes and the science behind flying and drive for hours to attend air shows.
Six years older, I didn’t think much of airplanes but for Christmas that year, I used one of his books to make a clay model plane which I called the QSP 93. It had a yellow propeller that could really spin and a little guy (supposed to be my brother) sitting in the cockpit. On Christmas Eve, I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited to give him the little plane and see his face when he opened it. His beaming smile was all that I hoped for.
I have always loved giving gifts. It’s been decades since I handmade them, but I’m hoping that will change as my kids get older.
For now I try to choose gifts that are handmade by someone even if it’s not me. In case that is also of interest to you, I compiled a list of some of my favorite makers right now. They are creating beauty, and advocating for change, and using their art and their voice to address issues that impact us all. The list, in no particular order, includes both makers I know personally and others I have found via Instagram. There are a wide range of painters, and printmakers, and ceramicists, and jewelers and hat makers, and kids doll and stuffie makers so enjoy delighting in their beautiful creations and supporting small women-run businesses.
Here’s to the makers who make the joy of giving even sweeter!
