A year and a half ago I sat drawing in my studio garage. I felt inspired by the creative ideas I had stayed up way too late working on but also felt exhausted from all the wake ups with my then teething 18 month old. Mostly I just felt really isolated wishing I had more of a community who could relate.
On a whim, I sent a note out to our neighborhood parent listserve with an invitation for other creative/tired parents to meet up for a glass of wine down the street.
To my surprise 10 others showed up…. and then kept showing up… and we’ve been meeting monthly ever since. Among us are painters and muralists and ceramicists and jewelry makers, writers, an animator and musician and makers of all kinds.
I not only gained a community of kind, warm, creative friends but I also now wear their beautiful handmade earrings on my zoom calls and drink my morning tea from handmade cups.
Like many we’ve been zoom meeting this year, but this Sunday we are coming together to participate in the Bernal Heights Holidays on the Hill. Dozens of artists around the neighborhood, including our group, will be selling their wares in a masked, socially distant celebration of local creativity.
So if you are in the Bay Area and are looking to do some local holiday shopping, come by this Sunday 11am-4pm to Radici Studios in Bernal Heights.
Here’s to seeking the people you need in your life, and to the power of supporting each other in new creative ways.
