I collaborated with 18 students in an after-school program at a Berkeley public school to co-create a mural rooted in community voice and shared values. As part of the process, students led a school-wide survey, gathering responses from parents, teachers, staff, and over 400 fellow students. The survey centered around prompts such as: What does kindness mean to you? How do you show respect? What does inclusivity feel like? How are you showing up for others?

We used the powerful reflections collected through this process to inform the mural’s design. The final piece features two hands holding a growing seed, from which a vibrant rainbow of colors bursts forth. Each band of color represented a different theme that was explored by each grade level. Together the mural weaves together a collective vision of growth, empathy, and connection.
